$3.96
In Barbara Koppel’s Academy Award-winning documentary film “American
Dream” meat packers union Local P-9 went on strike. Hormel hired temporary
workers and eventually broke the union, who were fighting to maintain their
hourly wage of $10.69, in a year (1985) when Hormel had profits of $29 million.
Twenty years later, an average meat packer is making $11.95 and hour. Hormel
is currently advertising a position for a “Bilingual Production Supervisor.” Made
in the U.S.A.
